OUR STORY
OUR MISSION : TO MAKE FILMS FOR HUMANS.
Painted Moon is interested in people before plot — complicated, imperfect people whose lives don't always fit neatly into heroes and villains. We’re drawn to character, ambiguity, humor, beauty, and the strange little moments that make people feel real. Our films trust the audience to come along for the ride.
Painted Moon Film Company took shape in Greencastle, Indiana, in 2022, when Anthony Mullis set out to make his first feature film, Buldoser.
What began with one independent film became a home for the next one — and for the people, ideas, and stories that come with it.
Painted Moon remains rooted in Indiana while building a growing community of actors, filmmakers, musicians, artists, and other creative collaborators who share a desire to make something worth watching.
Independent by design. Collaborative by desire.
Painted Moon stays close to its films from the first idea through the final edit, while leaving room for the actors, crew, musicians, and other collaborators who inevitably make the finished film better — and often more interesting — than it was on the page.
Independent filmmaking gives us the freedom to take chances, follow an unexpected idea, and make choices because they serve the story rather than because someone says that’s how movies are supposed to be made.
THE FILMMAKER
Anthony Mullis is a filmmaker, musician, and storyteller whose work crosses writing, directing, cinematography, editing, music, and production.
He stays closely involved throughout the filmmaking process, but Painted Moon isn’t meant to be a one-person endeavor. Each project brings together people with different talents, perspectives, and instincts — and Anthony believes the best version of a film is often discovered somewhere in that collaboration.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Making Buldoser proved that Painted Moon could take an independent feature from an idea on the page all the way to a finished film.
Now we’re doing it again.
Painted Moon is now developing its second feature, Olive, the Castle, and Satan Herself — a new story, a new set of challenges, and another chance to build on everything learned the first time around. Along the way, Painted Moon continues to grow the relationships, experience, and creative community that have taken shape around the films.
Making independent films like this is only sustainable when people choose to get behind them. If you’d like to be part of what Painted Moon is building, we’d love to have you along for the next one.
